  UCF Rainfall Analysis

The rainfall analysis and rainfall analysis software was produced as funded projects by the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the United States Geologic Survey by the Stormwater Management Institute at University of Central Florida. They are provided here as a service to engineers and technicians needing the results of this analysis.

Rainfall Reports.zip - Full Zip file of all files in the analysis

Overview and Methodology Documentation

Coming Soon: Methodology for Final Analysis

List of Sites (Analysis links)

  • List of Sites - Analysis Results - This page contains all sites with links to the full analysis of each site. Quality control information, site results, and distribution results are all included.
  • Rainfall Analysis Software - The raw data and analysis software. Data is in 4 Microsoft Access files.
  • Shape Files - The final results and rainfall contours as ESRI Shape Files.
  • Autcad DXF Files - The DXF Export of all contours (Autcad DXF format).
  • Surfer SRF Files - All Files in Surfer format.
  • Surfer Grid Files - The Grid Files for the Analysis, Surfer and AASCII format.
  • Surfer Post Files - Post maps showing values and locations used in analysis.
  • Google Earth (KML) Demo - See how the maps look in Google Earth.

Return Period Analysis Results

For each return period listed a table of the predicted maximum for each duration is shown. The predicted maximum is the value that is determined by (1) fitting the annual actual maxima to a distribution, and (2) fitting these distribution results to a linear regression model. The raw maxima and curve fit parameters are shown in the analysis results for each site in the List of Sites - Analysis Results.

Kriging Analysis Results

The krig analysis was done twice, once without a nugget effect, once with a nugget effect. In standard krig (no nugget effect), the iso lines are forced to go through all values at their exact values. This makes sense if you are developing contours where all values are exact. In the case of rainfall values there exists an uncertainty to each value. The nugget effect krig takes into account the variance between spatial rainfall values and allows the iso lines to have to match exact values at a point. This in turn smooths the curves. The nugget effect krig was done in response to a peer review of the analysis which will be published upon acceptance of the curves.

Preliminary Results and Maps

  • Kriging Analysis Results - The full rainfall distribution results were fit to state isohyetal plots using standard kriging techniques. Each of the results for all analyzed durations and return periods are included here. To access the full folder click here StandardKriging

Final Results and Maps

  • Krig Final Results with Nugget Effect - This page contains links to all the final results for the Krig analysis and isohyetal curves.

  • Nugget Kriging (1) - Access to Directory - contains Surfer Files. As part of the peer review process Nugget Kriging was a recommendation to smooth the curves. In standard kriging, iso lines are forced to go through all geographic points at the actual value of the point. This causes a tent post effect. In the case of rainfall data, these values do have a natural variance. An error variance of 0.5 and a micro variance on 0.5 was used in the kriging analysis utilizing a second variogram specifying these effects. The result of the smoothed variograms are in the linked folders. A full explanation of the analysis is included on the page - Correcting for Rainfall Iso Variance Using the Nugget Effect.

I was trying to use stations for all data in Florida and found few things that I needed checked. I hope the faciliators of this wonderful data set can help:
1. The coordinates of the Okeechobee stations (#6485) may need to be checked, unless I am mistaken
2. The Brooksville stations (#1048,,#1046) appear to have very low values for the intensity for each duration, say compated to near by stations. Have these been checked?
I appreciate any help.

Never mind on #2 above. I think I found my problem reading the Excel files. Sorry
